Here is a bit about our garden in school and how it benefits both students and staff alike.
Our sensory Garden at Scoil Áine plays a powerful role in helping our students with mental health challenges. It provides a calm safe place where our students can engage their senses – sight, smell, sound, touch and even taste in gentle therapeutic ways.
Natural elements like plants, textured paths, swing seats and wind chimes help reduce anxiety, stress and emotional overload.
Our sensory Garden offers opportunities for self regulation and emotional expression. Spending time outdoors can improve mood, concentration and overall well-being, while encouraging mindfulness and relaxation.
It also supports social interaction allowing students to connect with teachers and SNAs in a non-pressured environment.
Most importantly, our garden promotes inclusion and healing by recognising that learning is not only academic but emotional too. It nurtures a sense of belonging and confidence which is essential for good mental health and growth.
This year was our first year to grow some crops like potatoes, onions and garlic. Again this gave the students a huge sense of accomplishment as they were involved in preparing the soil, planting the seeds, harvesting the crops and most importantly cooking and eating the fruits of their work…..Well done to all the students!!!!
